Moontoll
A downloadable game
Roll your bones. Wind the clock. Pay the Moon.
You keep the Great Clock through the longest night, and every hour the Moon demands a toll of Light. Roll your bones (dice) to push the hand around a dial of little automaton figures: the ones you pass wake a little, the one you stop on wakes a lot. Wax × Flame = Light. Pay her every hour and you'll see the dawn.
The distance the hand travels each hour is fixed. Your only choice is how to spend it: many small steps for more landings, or a few long strides for more passes, on a dial you build up figure by figure, hour by hour.
What's in a night
- 57 figures in six families: beasts, birds, bugs, clockwork, folk and curios. Buy one you already own and it grows.
- 15 bones, each with its own faces, and marks you can carve onto them.
- Inlays carved into the hours of the dial itself: springs that bounce the hand onward, chimes, little bells, moonstones.
- Trinkets: one-use tricks for your pockets. Wind the hand back, jump it anywhere, ring the Bell early.
- The Moon's Hours bring 24 curses. A visitor knocks before each one, and if you pay her in full she leaves a favor.
- 8 candles to start from, each with its own rule, unlocked through 37 feats.
- Vows for darker nights, the Long Night after dawn, and a Daily Night that's the same for everyone.
- The Almanac: everything you've met, your records and a short guide.
Controls
Mouse and keyboard, or an Xbox, PlayStation or Switch Pro controller. Swap any time; the on-screen prompts follow whatever you touched last.
Installing on a Mac
Moontoll runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 13 Ventura or later.
- Download and unzip Moontoll-macOS.zip, then drag Moontoll into your Applications folder.
- Open it. The first time, macOS will say it can't verify the app, because small indie games like this one aren't notarized by Apple.
- Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. You only need to do this once.
Comfortable with Terminal? xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Moontoll.app does the same thing.
A game by Degife Keller. Every sprite, sound and note of music is made in code; there are no asset files.
